When DrNose was first established, it was assumed that it would be a device for the early screening of a small number of cancers. The first trials focused on breast cancer at Ben-Gurion University in Israel and lung cancer at the University of New South Wales in Australia. Both were successful, and the team is moving towards more extensive clinical trials to obtain regulatory approvals.
Along the way, the R&D team found that the device may also be effective at detecting early-stage signs associated with:

- COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
- Cystic fibrosis
- Pulmonary fibrosis
- Kidney diseases
- Liver diseases
- Diabetes
- Gastrointestinal diseases
The research indicates that the platform may also apply to the early-stage screening of other upper-thoracic cancers. The team is now investigating whether cancers such as colorectal cancer can also be detected in breath.
The key to DrNose is the device itself. It has long been known that people may exhale distinctive chemical compounds when unwell, but building a single device that can identify patterns associated with many ailments has been the challenge. DrNose is designed as a non-intrusive, low-cost and easy-to-use device that provides results in real time.
The device uses multiple specially selected sensors. Together, the patterns they generate can help indicate what a person may be suffering from. Hundreds of smell sensors are available on the market, and determining which specific sensors can be used for the targeted diseases has involved more than a decade of research.
The diagnostic algorithms use “Intuitive AI” technology developed by DrNose’s parent company, iOmniscient. Intuitive AI does not require deep learning with massive amounts of data or GPUs. This enables the team to train the DrNose device quickly with minimal datasets and at a lower cost.
